bwaughI was drawn to Covenant Theological Seminary’s Presbyterion, Spring 2026, when I ran across mention of Kenneth J. Stewart’s article, “J. Gresham Machen: Among the Evangelicals?” The author is Professor Emeritus of Theological Studies at Covenant College. After discussing Machen’s opinion of the label fundamentalist, he makes his case that Machen was Reformed but more willing to work with those having non-reformed theological commitments than has been portrayed by interpreters in years past. Stewart reviews Machen’s cautious interest in Billy Sunday; his work with the parachurch Y.M.C.A. in France during World War I; points out that he was willing to speak in evangelical summer Bible Conferences such as those held at Winona Lake; and other evidence that Stewart believes sets Machen among the Evangelicals. The author does not deny his Reformed commitment because he said, “Machen is unambiguously evangelical, catholic in spirit, and also firmly wedded to the Reformed theological tradition” (63), but he does believe his evangelical and catholic spirit have been neglected.
Other articles include three papers from the Evangelical Theological Society national meeting in 2025 along with other articles including one for bibliophiles, “A Little Library History: Recognizing 50 Years of Covenant Seminary’s J. Oliver Buswell Jr. Library,” by Library Director Steve Jamieson. Much of the work of library personnel over the years involves expanding facilities and judiciously laying hold of advancing technology.
