Encouragement From Samson, W. Robert Godfrey

The book of Judges is challenging to read because many of the individuals making up the list of redeemers are less than admirable as they take on the ministry of relieving Israel from its quagmire caused by every man doing what is right in his own eyes instead of obeying God, their king. Blood, gore, killing, opportunism, selfishness, doubt, womanizing, deception, and other aspects of the individuals make it difficult to accept them as positive personalities. Of the judges, Samson is the most impressive and memorable with his great strength and flowing hair, but he suffered from great sin including his relationship with Delilah. Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, president and professor emeritus of Westminster Seminary, California, as well as Ligonier Ministries teaching fellow and chairman of Ligonier, has provided a fine lecture about Samson, “The Christian Context for Samson: The Life of Samson.” He shows how Samson faced the Philistines and through faith brought their destruction, encouraged and relieved the Jews, and how he should encourage Christians today. He makes timely and pointed application to the Church’s situation in the world today and gives viewers much to think about. The video is about 22 minutes long but its brevity does not restrict the weighty content of Dr. Godfrey’s lesson. [posted 9/5/2026]
